Your essay is read against the same four categories a human examiner uses: Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. You get a band for each one, not a single mystery number, because the four rarely move together. A common pattern is strong vocabulary sitting next to a Task Response that never quite answers the question, and you cannot fix that if all you see is one figure.

Feedback you can act on tonight

The band is the least interesting part. What you want is the note underneath it: this paragraph drifts off the question, this argument has no clear position, these three sentences repeat the same linking phrase, this idea is good but undeveloped. Feedback tied to a specific place in your own writing is the thing you can actually work on before you write the next essay.

I spent a focused stretch making the assessment honest rather than flattering. Early versions could be swayed by length or by a few big words. Now the judgement is anchored to the official band descriptors, and the final band is worked out by our own code from the four criteria, not lifted from whatever summary the model felt like printing. What it is, and what it is not
